ROBERT M. C. WEBSTER
BARRISTER – ACADEMIC
MEDIA CONTRIBUTOR – ROYAL WATCHER
His principal areas of specialization are European Union Law (including Brexit!) and Media Law. His early experience in general practice at the London Bar included the conduct of numerous jury trials. His teaching encompasses an unusually wide array of law subjects – from the domestic to the international.
Webster has combined practice with an academic career that began at London’s Inns of Court School of Law – where he was once described as “one of the Crown Jewels of the faculty.” He went on to teach extensively in the United States.
Hailed by the School’s Administration as a “truly spectacular ambassador,” he spent the past decade of his teaching career at Whittier Law School where he directed the Center for International and Comparative Law, bringing academics, practitioners, politicians and diplomats together to debate matters of international moment. Additionally, he was tapped to be the School’s first Director of International Development, in which capacity he pioneered an immensely popular Entertainment Law Institute in Barcelona with the help of leading Industry lawyers, and, in conjunction with the University of Barcelona, drawing participants from across the United States and Europe. Webster has a history of establishing and directing innovative and lucrative overseas study programmes – described as “exemplary” by the legal educational establishment.
His wide-ranging experience in practice informs his practical and imaginative teaching style, which has consistently earned him the plaudits of his students, meriting the Professor of the Year Award in 2015 and 2017 in addition to numerous other accolades; as one student said of him: he is “incredibly knowledgeable, entertaining, approachable & informative,” with a Law School Dean remarking that “Webster teaches to rave reviews.”
He has lectured worldwide on areas related to Europe, Media Law and International Business Negotiations and has proven to be a perennially popular provider of Continuing Education Courses and event speaker. As a member of California’s judiciary opined: Webster has “an amazing gift of being both entertaining and informative.”
His record as an erstwhile litigator, and as an advocacy coach for aspirant barristers, continues to make him the ideal trainer for those wishing to master the art of public speaking.
Robert Webster contributes to the media on British and European affairs and on the British Monarchy on which he is considered to be an expert. Indeed, he has provided coverage (described as “awesome” and “educational and entertaining”) on “all things royal” including the wedding of Prince Charles and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee for television and radio.
Blessed with an historian’s knowledge, an encyclopaedic understanding of the “mechanics” of the monarchy, and, an ever-present charming wit, he brings his commentaries alive with the zeal and depth of the aficionado – along with an inimitably personal perspective – that makes him such an engaging analyst.
